The community of Saint John Brebeuf welcomes two new teachers to our staff; Chris Kazun and Catherine Streeter.

Chris Kazun is no stranger to the Catholic School system.  He attended Our Lady of Assumption Elementary School and Archbishop Carney Regional Secondary High School.  After graduation, he attended Douglas College and then continued onto Simon Fraser University where he achieved his Bachelor of Arts Degree in History.  His specialties are Ancient and Medieval History, Early Modern History and Church History.  He loves reading, films, exercise and is currently continuing his studies in Medieval and Renaissance Martial Arts.  This semester at SJB he will be teaching English 8, Religion 10, Socials 10 and Comparative Civilizations.

Catherine Streeter is actually returning to SJB this semester.  She taught here from 1997-2006.  Her specialty is Human Kinetics.  She will be teaching Religion 10, PE 10 & PE 11/12.  Catherine feels it is a blessing to be able to teach and live out her faith each day at St. John Brebeuf.  She is married with four children, and enjoys doing the simple things with her family as well as gardening, staying active, reading & finding quiet time for prayer.

Please take the time to introduce yourself to Mr. Kazun and Ms. Streeter and welcome them to our wonderful school community.

Happy New Year!

Mr. Jeffrey Lannan began his road to a PhD at Simon Fraser University in 2005 within the discipline of Educational Psychology.  However, after several years, he began to feel dissatisfied, moved into area of Curriculum, Theory and Implementation and found a perfect fit. “It has been a tremendous challenge over the past seven years between teaching, coaching, and raising a family while trying to complete my studies.  It has only been through the grace of God, the support of family, friends/co-workers, and the excellent teachers at SFU that have helped to make my life’s dream possible,” states Mr. Lannan. “I have taught in a Catholic education system in both Newfoundland and in British Columbia and have a deep respect and love for the commitment I see in the Catholic educators I have worked with.  The staff and students, here at SJB, have been a blessing.  All I have ever gotten from them is encouragement, love and support.  It really has been a moving experience.”

Mr. Lannan recalls and admits that he could neither read nor write in the second grade because he had and still battles with dyslexia.  It was at a Catholic school that he received the help to overcome dyslexia, which otherwise would have crippled any academic future.  Since then, he has gone on to become a valued high school English teacher and now has earned a PhD in Education.  “To me, this is a miracle, and I remain profoundly grateful for the countless blessings that I have received.”

So, it is with pride that we, the community of St. John Brebeuf, acknowledge Mr. Jeffrey Lannan for his immense dedication to education and the accomplishment of earning a  PhD.

Congratulations Dr. Lannan!

Mount Saint Helens

Dedicated teachers helped bring science to life as they took 67 SJB students on three day trek to Skamania County, Washington to see Mount St. Helens.  At the infamous tallest peak of the Cascade Mountain Range, students were able to see firsthand the volcanic crater, the massive effects of its violent and deadly eruption in 1980 and one of the largest lava caves in the world.    Our students were also able to be eyewitnesses to see how plants and animals were able to respond, adapt and now flourish after the massive eruption.

Reverence for Life Sleepover

Reverence for Life and Campus Ministry kicked off the school year with their famous “sleepover”.  120 students from all grades, as well as 17 dedicated alumni spent the night at the school getting to know each other and the pro-life movement a little better.  Guest Speaker, James Borkowski challenged the students to get involved and led and facilitated conversations about the realities, joys and challenges of being a young Catholic in the world today.

The students gathered at midnight in the chapel to pray together for the unborn and life in all its stages.   The enthusiasm of the students was infectious and shows how deep the desire our youth holds for a better world.

A good time was had by all and some wonderful plans were made concerning social justice initiatives for the upcoming school year.

Parish Masses

One of our school goals is to have a more meaningful and visible presence in our Catholic community.  Students of St. John Brebeuf will be leading a Sunday liturgy, once in the Fall and again in the spring, at each of our 7 supporting Parishes.  SJB students will lead the congregation as greeters, lectors and gift bearers.

We would love to see as many SJB students at these Masses and show each of the congregations how their support is going to a great cause.  We ask that every family make a genuine effort to make it to their Parish for their assigned Mass.  Students are requested to wear their uniforms to Mass that day.

Any student that would like to volunteer to have a role as a greeter, lector or gift bearer at a particular Mass is asked to see Mr. Brennan as soon as possible.

Cops for Cancer

Every fall over a hundred members of law enforcement and emergency services cycle up to two weeks across four areas of British Columbia to support children with cancer and their families. Donations to Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock, Tour de North, Tour de Valley and Tour de Coast are invested in life-saving childhood cancer research and caring support services including the acclaimed summer recreation program, Camp Goodtimes.  Saint John Brebeuf students enjoyed a visit from Tour de Valley region of the Cops for Cancer.  They listened to the inspiring message that together we are strong and together we will fight this disease.

Terry Fox Run

The students of St. John Brebeuf showed their true pride as they exceeded their fund raising goal of $3000.00 to donate to the Terry Fox Foundation.  Donations are still being accepted.  Way to go BEARS!

Test Drive a Ford Fundraiser

Thank you to those of you who came out and test drove one of the fancy new Ford vehicles that we had on our lot, September 23.  Those of you who still have outstanding driver forms are kindly asked to submit those into the office.

Abbotsford Police

Abbotsford Police Sergeant Mike Novakowski came to speak to the students about the realities and pitfalls of gang life.  He spoke about surrounding yourself with positive people and activities and how today’s youth can impact the world in a positive way rather than negative.
