SECONDARY SCHOOL APPRENTICESHIP (SSA) PROGRAM

St. John Brebeuf Secondary School provides students with an opportunity to participate in the Secondary School Apprenticeship (SSA) Program. The SSA is a career program that gives students the opportunity to begin an apprenticeship in high school, while earning high school credits. The SSA works in conjunction with the Industry Training Authority (ITA) allowing students to complete their BC and Red Seal Trade Programs.

A Secondary School Apprenticeship involves part time work within a trade. Students will be earning money and learning valuable skills doing a job they love, getting high school and post secondary credits for it, and pursue other academic courses at the same time.

Examples include:

• Bricklayer

• Carpenter

• Electrician

• Glazier

• Industrial Mechanic

• Plumber

• Welder

• Chef

• Hair Dresser

As an added bonus, secondary school apprentices can qualify for a $1,000 if they meet the following criteria:

• Have been registered in a school district Secondary School Apprenticeship Program prior to graduation

• Graduated with a grade 12 Dogwood Diploma or Adult Dogwood

• Successfully completed SSA 11A, SSA 11B, SSA 12A and SSA 12B

• Maintained a C+ average or better on Grade 12 numbered courses

• Continued working or training full time in the trade 5 months after secondary school graduation or have 1100 hrs reported to ITA

HOW DOES THE APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM WORK?

• Eligible students may apply to be considered to enroll in an apprenticeship training program in a joint agreement between SJB and the Industry Training Authority (ITA).

• Students make arrangements with prospective employers, in consultation with Mrs. Bryson (Apprenticeship Coordinator), for their apprenticeship training.

• Student applicants must arrange with Mr. Fraser (Academic Counselor) that their grade 11 & 12 courses are such that:
  1. They are still able to meet Provincial Graduation Requirements.
  2. They meet the minimum entrance requirements for training in the trade area.

• Upon successful completion of 480 hours towards their first year of workplace-based training, students will receive 16 credits for secondary school graduation (equivalent to 4 full-time courses).

• Students will be evaluated a minimum of four times throughout their apprenticeship program. These evaluations will result in the grade awarded for each apprenticeship course.
